At first I thought I had pulled a muscle ducking under a tree branch while out running with a friend.<\/p><p>I took it easy for a few days and the pain seemed to subside. But then it came back, and with a vengeance. It remained with me on and off for a year and was often so severe that I had to hold onto pieces of furniture to support myself when rising from a chair or my bed, or when brushing my teeth.<\/p><p>I\u2019m a runner and, when my pain first appeared, I was training for my first 50km ultra run. Thankfully I was able to complete this, and felt no pain during that special day (this became a very important piece of \u2018evidence\u2019 for me to refer back to once I began my healing journey).<\/p><p>Thereafter, the pain became more permanent and, like most people, I followed the traditional medical model of treatment: Xrays, MRIs, osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists, but nobody was able to \u2018heal\u2019 me. It was only later on that I realised I was capable of healing myself.\u00a0<\/p><p>I often left an appointment feeling worse than I\u2019d felt going in. Each practitioner offered me a new nugget of negativity: I was diagnosed with hip arthritis, disc generation, flat back syndrome, lumbar sciatica, convex left inflection, discopathy of L4-L5 and L5-S1 with a trapped nerve and a 9mm pelvic imbalance, meaning that sexy wiggle wasn\u2019t so sexy after all!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-edc1208 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"edc1208\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3380555\" data-id=\"3380555\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-173bdacf elementor-view-default elementor-widget elementor-widget-icon\" data-id=\"173bdacf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"icon.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-icon-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-icon\">\n\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-quote-left\"><\/i>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-340183e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-testimonial\" data-id=\"340183e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"testimonial.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-testimonial-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-testimonial-content\"><i>The MRI showed arthritis in the lumbar region, some swelling at the vertebral endplates and a trapped nerve around L4-L5.<\/i><\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e8d5e33 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2e8d5e33\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0It all sounded pretty scary, and I\u2019ll admit to shedding tears in my car on a few occasions. I was advised to stop running by everyone I encountered, including my aerobics teacher at my once-weekly class. For a while, I listened to them. They were the experts after all, weren\u2019t they?<\/p><p>Then I got fed up of not being able to run. After running for twenty years, I felt it had become part of my identity and who I was. It was a form of stress relief, gave me a sense of freedom and empowerment, was my only social activity and made me feel strong and motivated to cope with life\u2019s challenges. After this point, what started as acute pain becomes what is termed \u2018chronic pain\u2019. It was frightening for me to identify with this category. I later discovered how fear would fuel the pain fire.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-585ab55 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"585ab55\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f87ec56\" data-id=\"f87ec56\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e568df1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e568df1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>A Book That Would Change My Life<\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-955f1a5 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"955f1a5\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-553df5b\" data-id=\"553df5b\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-368a853 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"368a853\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>After months of desperately searching for someone to \u2018fix\u2019 me, feeling frustrated and close to desperation, I came across a podcast that mentioned a book, credited with healing someone of their lower back pain. It was called,\u00a0<i>Healing Back Pain<\/i>\u00a0by Dr. John Sarno, Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine and attending physician at the New York University Medical Center. I was filled with hope for the first time in months.<\/p><p>I read the book, and although I didn\u2019t have a \u2018book cure\u2019 as some people have claimed to have experienced, Dr Sarno\u2019s words completely resonated with me, and I saw myself on every page.\u00a0<\/p><p>Dr Sarno explained that the terrible terms I had been diagnosed with were part of the normal ageing process. They were what he termed \u2018normal abnormalities\u2019. It shocked me to learn that the spine degenerates from the age of 20 and that if anyone my age (I\u2019m 46) were to have an Xray or MRI they would almost certainly be found to have some form of degeneration in their spine too.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-8f91a25 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"8f91a25\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7647228f\" data-id=\"7647228f\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-70f9b43f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"70f9b43f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><strong><span style=\"font-style: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5); color: var(--ast-global-color-3);\">\u00a0<\/span>The fact that these \u2018normal abnormalities\u2019 could be present in the body without causing any pain was a revelation to me! This discovery became an important part of my journey towards becoming pain free.<\/strong><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-747eb3a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"747eb3a\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-dfe3e87\" data-id=\"dfe3e87\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5536c4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b5536c4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The second impactful discovery for me was the notion that certain personality traits made it more likely for some people to suffer from chronic pain.<\/p><p>According to Steve Ozanich, in his book \u2018The Great Pain Deception\u2019, there is a\u00a0<i>Type-T personality<\/i>. The T stands for Tension and is taken from \u2018Tension Myositis Syndrome\u2019 (TMS), also known as tension myoneural syndrome or mind body syndrome \u2013 the name given by Dr. John Sarno to the numerous psychosomatic (relating to the interaction of mind and body) musculoskeletal and nerve symptoms and conditions, most notably back pain, but also tendonitis, fibromyalgia, plantar fasciitis, coccydynia (pain in the coccyx), gastric conditions, neck and shoulder pain and carpal tunnel syndrome.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7f12a22 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7f12a22\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-664aa78\" data-id=\"664aa78\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ce8d96 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2ce8d96\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>Type-T personality traits<\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-c234086 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"c234086\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a952ef1\" data-id=\"a952ef1\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b2c4bc8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b2c4bc8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><b>Perfectionism<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 Does every project or task you undertake need to be perfect and do you ignore your own needs and feelings to accomplish a task?<\/li><li><b>Goodism\/People-pleasing<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 Do you put the needs and desires of others before your own? Do you play peacemaker in a dispute and do you keep your thoughts to yourself, even if you disagree strongly with someone?<\/li><li><b>Legalist<\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Unlike perfectionists who seek to do the right thing, legalists seek to\u00a0<i>be<\/i>\u00a0right. Responsibility and upholding their commitments are common among legalists. Legalists also hold themselves to extremely high standards that can breed feelings of unworthiness and self-hatred.<\/li><li><b>Stoic<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 Do you find it awkward or difficult to express your emotions? If people saw you express your emotions, do you think they would think of you negatively?<\/li><li><b>Anxiety and Fear<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 Do you think that if you are honest with people they will reject you? When your family members go somewhere, do you worry that something terrible might happen to them?<\/li><li><b>Low Self-Esteem<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 Do you feel that other people know more than you or are usually better at things than you are? Do you question your ability to do things?<\/li><li><b>Hostility and Aggression<\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Do you sometimes overreact to an issue or event or do you place your frustration onto something less severe and less difficult to talk about than an underlying issue? Do you have deep issues you avoid discussing that are associated with fear or shame?<\/li><li><b>Dependency\u00a0<\/b>\u2013 When making plans do you prefer if other people take the lead? People with this trait often choose careers that have security yet lack any sense of challenge or reward.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><p><em>(Source: TMS Wiki site\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmswiki.org\/ppd\/TMS_Personality_Traits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.tmswiki.org\/ppd\/TMS_Personality_Traits<\/a>)<\/em><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a376c19 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a376c19\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f782135\" data-id=\"f782135\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1399b46 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1399b46\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If you can relate to the above character traits, there is a strong chance you are repressing your true feelings, and that the subconscious resentment you have over this will be felt in the body as \u2018pain\u2019.<\/p><p>This was a turning point for me, as I realised that the pain I was experiencing was merely a very natural way of my body telling me <em>\u2018you\u2019re repressing your feelings to please other people and I\u2019m trying to let you know\u2019.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p>According to the famous 13th\u00a0century Persian poet Rumi:\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cThese pains you feel are messengers. Listen to them\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>For the first time for a very long time I started to ask myself what I was really feeling and what I wasn\u2019t allowing to surface. It was this repression of my emotions that was causing my body to remain in a stressed, over-adrenalized, anxious state.\u00a0<\/p><p>The brain cannot distinguish between a real threat and a perceived threat, and my own unexpressed thoughts, desires and fears were manifesting as chronic pain in my body.<\/p><p>I needed to learn how to turn off this stress response\u2026.<\/p><p><em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodyfoodinstitute.com\/how-to-turn-off-the-stress-response-reduce-chronic-pain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Part 2 &#8211;
